The five-star, ANA (Shangri-La) Hotel adjoins the Sydney CBD and historic Rocks precinct, commanding uninterrupted views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay and harbour. The landmark tower is part of a city-block redevelopment and includes 600 rooms and suites, a 600-person ballroom, a five-storey atrium sky-lounge, restaurants, bars, reception rooms, swimming pool, gymnasium, the restoration and adaptive re-use of surrounding historic houses and the creation of a central internal square within the site.

The site is challenging in the extreme: a twin-track railway tunnel passes directly beneath the tower and an expressway is below the northern part of the porte cochere.

When the hotel changed ownership, Shangri-La commissioned fjmt to upgrade the hotel to their impeccable five-star standards.

The project has received industry acclaim including a RAIA Merit Award for Architecture, a New South Wales Tourism Energy Utilisation Award, and a Special Mention for Outstanding Structures from the Fédération Internationale de la Précontrainte.
