Balfour Park is an urban renewal project at the southern gateway to Sydney’s CBD and involves the redevelopment of the former Carlton & United Brewery. fjmt was invited to provide a concept design for this landmark commission.

Fundamental to fjmt’s approach is the creation of a rich network of public places (parks, gardens, squares and residential streets). These are integrated with the existing village and city networks and overlaid with a rich mix of facilities (such as shops, cafes, galleries, offices, educational facilities, apartments, houses and terraces).

The proposed housing accommodates a range of living and lifestyle options underpinned by a commitment to sustainability.

Central to the scheme is a significant new public open space, Balfour Park. A sequence of new squares reinforces the open-space network and these squares are strategically positioned in relation to the heritage brewery buildings and precinct entry points.
