An invited international competition was held to design the new Sydney Harbour Moving Image Centre. It was to be sited adjacent to, and within the existing Museum of Contemporary Art on the western shore of Circular Quay — one of Australia’s most significant historical and cultural sites.
The proposal is a dynamic engagement of art, city and moving image. The natural topography, harbour and traces of earliest settlement inspired a form characterised by ribbons of steel and glass, light and movement. A series of glimmering planes are inserted into the existing sandstone masses and extend in a sinuous organic forms to orientate the main public cinemas and roof top theatres directly towards the City’s icons: the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.
