The Meta mixed-use development, located within a dense inner-city precinct, integrates a converted heritage-listed warehouse with a new contemporary infill structure. The eight-storey project provides 77 innovative apartments (including unique live/work atelier units) and ground level retail tenancies that activate and add to the liveliness and vitality of the streetscape.
Careful consideration ensured the integrity of the existing building was respected and maintained. The essence of the heritage warehouse is preserved; the intricate brick facade and internal ironbark timber fabric have been retained and restored. The adjacent addition features natural and modern materials and a distinctive, lightweight roof canopy. It creates a transparency that contrasts and complements the industrial masonry character of the warehouse. Distinctive interiors have been created through collaboration with renowned designer Philippe Starck.
The project has been recognised for design excellence, having been awarded the Energy Australia/National Trust Heritage Award and RAIA NSW Chapter Multiple Housing Commendation.
