Following a developer-led design competition and public exhibition fjmt was commissioned as architects for the redevelopment of the Parliament Square. It is an important site in Hobart due to its proximity immediately adjacent to Parliament House, the waterfront and the CBD. It incorporates frontages to three important city streets that afford the opportunity to cohesively knit together this currently degraded precinct into an important addition to the city.
The project includes the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of series of heritage-listed buildings, the removal of some inappropriate buildings, creating the opportunity to incorporate a new office tower and an open public space with strong links to the Murray Street/Sullivan’s Cove vista. The new is centred on the Parliament House axis to reinforce the significance of this important public building.
The sustainable redevelopment will incorporate 15,000sqm of new workplace accommodation, bars, café, public open space, and amphitheatre to facilitate public gathering.
