Following an international design competition, fjmt has been selected by the University of Oxford to design this landmark teaching and research laboratory complex. Augmenting the functions of the existing CRL1 research building, the new facility will provide an additional 20,000sqm of floorspace with over forty wet, laser, NRM and solid state laboratories, teaching laboratories, lecture theatres, seminar, workplace and café, and integrated public domain, providing facilities appropriate to the University’s position as the world leader in Chemistry teaching and research.
The architectural design balances function, efficiency and sustainability with innovation to create a dramatic and exciting new landmark at the centre of the Science precinct. Whilst contemporary in expression, the proposed building will complement the unique heritage qualities of Oxford to create a cohesive urban response.
